Abramorama has acquired worldwide theatrical and digital distribution rights to “Upheaval,” a documentary about former Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. The indie studio plans to premiere the film in early June 2021.
Directed by Jonathan Gruber (“Follow Me”), the film follows Begin, a proud yet scarred leader haunted by the Holocaust and decades of war, who struggles to balance history and heroism as he attempts to make peace with his greatest enemy and cement a legacy.
Francesco, a documentary feature about Pope Francis that premiered at last October’s Rome Film Festival to strong notices and had the whole world talking about the pontiff’s comments regarding gay Catholics, has been acquired by discovery+, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The film will be released in virtual cinemas ahead of its debut on discovery+ on Sunday, March 28, which marks the start of Holy Week.
UPDATE (11/23/20): After having its theatrical release delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, The Library That Dolly Built will now become available as a worldwide streaming event. The documentary will stream for free exclusively on Facebook Wednesday, December 9th at 7 p.m. ET. The screening will be followed by a performance and conversation featuring Parton.
EXCLUSIVE: Indie distributor Abramorama has launched Abramorama Selects, a new label that will aim to shepherd global digital distribution and marketing for nonfiction feature films and TV series. As part of the new venture, it has expanded its existing partnership with Giant Pictures to make it a preferred partner, and will kick off the initiative this week with a title fitting for the music doc-focused Abramorama: Herb Alpert Is…, the John Scheinfeld-directed documentary about the music icon.
EXCLUSIVE: Discovery and Abramorama are teaming for a virtual theatrical and broadcast rollout of Apocalypse ‘45, a documentary from Erik Nelson that recounts the harrowing end of World War II through the eyes of 24 men who lived through the events and using never-before-seen footage. The documentary will get a two-week exclusive virtual cinema run beginning August 14, leading into the the film’s Labor Day Weekend broadcast on Discovery Channel.
Abramorama is set to give the five-part financial crime documentary series The Con a virtual premiere and a global digital release.
ABCinemaNOW will host the virtual premiere on Aug. 5 of the series’ first episode about the human cost of the 2008 financial crisis. That will be followed by a two-week exclusive streaming run in North America from Aug. 7 and a targeted digital rental release on Aug. 21.
Abramorama is set to give feature documentaries on Olympia Dukakis and Kaye Ballard virtual premieres to honor iconic women of the theater.
Olympia will receive a ABCinemaNOW national live-streaming premiere in North America on July 9, while Kaye Ballard - The Show Goes On! will debut July 14. Both film premieres will have a special introduction and will be followed by virtual panel discussions, with participants to be announced.
Parkland Rising — the feature documentary from Cheryl Horner McDonough about a teen-led gun-reform movement following the Florida tragedy — is set for a series of premiere screening events to honor National Gun Violence Awareness Day and Wear Orange Weekend.
Who Will Write Our History, Abramorama’s Roberta Grossman documentary about a secret band of journalists, scholars and community leaders in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1940 who fought back against Nazi propaganda with pen and paper, will be spotlighted as part of a global screening event January 27 on International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
